Your gums enhance the appearance of your smile, but they also keep your teeth in their proper positions and protect you from the effects of oral bacteria. A loss of gum tissue can increase your risk of cavities, tooth loss and other oral and overall health issues. Dr. Brett Barney, Dr. Jonathan Hall and Dr. Aaron Charpentier offer soft tissue grafting to correct your gum recession and prevent damage to your teeth and smile.

Gum recession may occur due to a number of factors, including:

  • Periodontal disease
  • Overaggressive brushing
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Use of tobacco products

Common symptoms of gum recession include:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Exposed tooth roots
  • Teeth that look longer
  • Inflammation
  • Bleeding of the gums
  • Bad breath (halitosis)

Soft tissue grafting, also known as gum grafting, is a treatment in which gum tissue is taken from another area of your mouth and placed into an area where gum tissue has previously been lost. When you receive this treatment, our dentists will take the gingival tissue for the graft and stitch it onto the areas of the gums that are lacking tissue. If we are using your own tissues, the graft will most likely be taken from the roof of your mouth or the surrounding gums. We may also use tissue-stimulating proteins to help encourage faster healing and supplement your body’s natural growth abilities.
