Wisdom Tooth Wisdom

When you are in your late teens or early twenties, the last back molars on both sides of your mouth finally come in. These teeth are called your wisdom teeth. Some people whose wisdom teeth surface without issue will never need them removed.

Many times, the wisdom teeth do not fully appear or may come in crooked crowding the other teeth. When this happens, it can cause tenderness and disease. Also, the wisdom tooth may crest the gums only to be overtaken again.

In this case, your dentist will usually decide to extract the specific tooth to ensure that your other teeth have room to adjust properly. Teeth that are removed prior to the age of 20 will have less time to develop roots and are more easily removed with fewer problems.

Impacted wisdom teeth are planted into the bone of the jaw and must be fragmented to be extricated. The method of the oral surgeon is to cut a slit into the gums over the molar and take out the tooth piece by piece. This lessens the impact made on the jaw bone.

Once the procedure is done, there will normally be some swelling and tenderness in the neck and face. The amount of bruising after the operation varies from person to person but all patients will be given medication to reduce discomfort.

For the next few days, it is vital that proper oral hygiene is exercised in order to heal your mouth cleanly without further issue. Everyday gargling with a germ-fighting mouthwash is recommended.

If you’re between 16 and 19 and are experiencing tenderness in your rearmost teeth, you may be ready to have your wisdom teeth out. Dr. Brett M. Barney would be happy to evaluate your situation.
