Healthy Eating for a Healthy Smile

It’s clear that what we eat affects our physical health, but did you know that anything you put in your mouth affects your oral health, too? The foods you eat can have an extremely helpful effect upon your smile. Four foods you’ll want to incorporate into your diet are:

Water: Fluoridated water is the best liquid for healthy teeth. Fluoride makes teeth more resistant to bacteria-produced acids that can cause cavities. Check with your city to see if they put fluoride in your tap water. If not, many bottled water companies will add fluoride as a mineral too. In any case, water will help cleanse your mouth of bad bacteria, making it the perfect beverage to drink.

Lean Protein: Protein-rich food like eggs, fish, meat, milk, and poultry are outstanding sources of the mineral phosphorus. Did you know that phosphorous is the second most plentiful mineral in your body? Along with calcium, phosphorus plays a fundamental role in oral health by building and protecting tooth enamel. Nuts, especially are great for teeth due to their low carb count, because the bacteria that cause cavities feed on carbohydrates. Chewing nuts also stimulates saliva, which replenishes the mouth with fortifying nutrients and antibodies.

Fruits and Vegetables: Fruits and veggies offer fiber to the body, opposing the sugars they contain. They transport water to the mouth as well. Dark leafy greens are particularly good for teeth. Fruits and veggies are a vital part of a healthy diet and tasty way to help your smile.

Dairy: High-calcium dairy products such as cheese, milk, and yogurt provide calcium and protein to the mouth, strengthening your teeth. They are also low in sugar.
