Root Canals and You

Millions of teeth are saved every year with root canal therapy. And contrary to widely held belief, root canals are designed to relieve pain, not cause it. Signs that you need a root canal usually include mild to severe toothaches. Getting a root canal, however, is relatively painless. It’s similar to what you might experience getting a cavity filling. Dr. Brett M. Barney will apply a powerful anesthetic to the area to make sure that you are comfortable.

How does a root canal work? Before that question is answered, you’ll need to know a bit about the anatomy of the tooth. Your tooth is composed of layers. The outermost layer is your white enamel. Underneath that is a hard layer called dentin. Finally, on the innermost part is the tooth pulp. This is made up of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue that help your permanent teeth come in as you are growing up.

After your teeth have fully developed, however, you no longer need the pulp. Instead, the gum tissue surrounding the tooth supports its life. If your pulp becomes diseased, Dr. Brett M. Barney can safely remove the pulp using root canal therapy. Otherwise the rest of the tooth might be infected, leading to a full extraction.
