Are you at an increased risk for sleep apnea? Sleep apnea is a common yet severe sleeping disorder in which breathing patterns are interrupted by your sleep. This can easily be caused by genetic predispositions, an airway that is not fully open, or even issues with your brain signals instructing your breathing muscles to function properly. It is important to be aware of the risks associated with sleep apnea and receive the necessary treatments when available.
If you are a male over the age of 40, you will be at an increased risk for sleep apnea. Furthermore, individuals who are overweight or have large tonsils or a large tongue are more likely to suffer from the condition. If you have a family history of the condition, have a nasal obstruction, allergies, sinus problems or other issues with your health, you may be at an increased risk for sleep apnea.
Treatments for sleep apnea include adjusting the positions at which you sleep. This can be something as simple as not sleeping on your back. In other situations, you may need the use of an oral appliance such as a Continuous Positive Air Pressure device, which can help improve breathing while you sleep. Other oral appliances can help shift and realign your jaw as needed. In severe situations, surgery may be required.
